Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy

In April 2007, we have installed ASSP with ASSP Deluxe on all our non-dedicated servers.

Since then, the amount of SPAM received by most of our clients has radically reduced, but some clients have complained about false positives, or valid e-mails rejected improperly.

95% of our clients who received false positives were not using their own domains as their SMTP server, preventing ASSP from learning which e-mails were valid, and which were not.

Another advantage with ASSP is that unlike in the past, e-mails rejected are now bounced instead of being discarded, so that the senders know if you didn't get his or her e-mail.

What to do if you are not receiving an e-mail ?

If a person sending you an e-mail is receiving a bounce when e-mailing you, or if you do not receive the e-mail, it might have been blocked by our anti-spam software.

To ensure delivery of e-mails, there are 3 things you can do :

  1. Make sure that you are using your domain name for your SMTP server
  2. Try to whitelist the e-mail address of the sender
  3. Create a spambox e-mail account to receive the rejected e-mail

Set your own domain for your SMTP server

For ASSP to work properly, you need to :

  • set your SMTP server in your mail client (such as Outlook) to : yourdomain.com,
  • activate authentication on your outgoing mail server,
  • if port 25 is blocked, try port 26.

How to whitelist an e-mail address

Once you have activate authentication on your outgoing SMTP server, you can whitelist an e-mail by e-mailing :

  • assp-white@YOURDOMAIN.COM

With 1 e-mail address to whitelist per line in the body of the e-mail. You may whitelist a whole domain by using _ALL_@ in front of the domain name.

In additition, every e-mail you send thru your domain's SMTP server will automatically add every receipient to the whitelist.

how to setup a spambox e-mail account

You can receive a copy of all of the rejected e-mails by creating a spambox@YOURDOMAIN.COM mailbox.

You can create that mailbox like any other one in your control panel, but unlike other e-mail accounts, we recommand using an IMAP connection instead of a POP3 connection.

Unlike POP3, IMAP will leave the messages on the server synchronize your IMAP folder with the server so that if you delete or mark as read any of the e-mails, every other IMAP connection (including Webmail) will also delete or mark as read the e-mail.

Futhermore, IMAP will only download the headers of the e-mails until you are ready to read the e-mail.

Please note that any e-mail a spambox older than 7 days is deleted automatically by the server.
